Summer is just around the corner, and that means we’re heading into barbecue season! You may even be planning on breaking out the grill for Father’s Day this Sunday. We all love eating juicy fresh fruit during those hot summer days, but have you ever thought about adding grilled fruit to your BBQ menu? You could serve your grilled fruit as a good-for-you dessert, or even as a savory side dish. The grill adds a unique smokey flavor to the fruit, and the heat causes the sugars in the fruit to caramelize naturally. Grilling fruit is super easy, just follow the tips below. You can even combine a few different fruits and serve them with some parmesan crisps for an easy gourmet appetizer or with ice cream for a more decadent dessert! If you want to step up the gourmet factor, you could also use your grilled fruit in a salad or dessert recipe – a few of our favorites are below! Here are some basic tips for grilling fruit:
1) Brush your fruit lightly with a high smoke point oil like coconut oil before grilling to prevent it from sticking to the grill and to add a little something extra to the flavor profile.
2) Use the indirect heat method, i.e. don’t cook them directly over the flame (or the hottest part of the grill), to avoid cooking the outsides of your fruit too quickly.
3) You don’t need to grill the fruit for too long, just a few minutes until you see grill marks. Just be sure to keep an eye on it!
4) Ideal grilling fruits are firm and barely ripe. Try watermelon, pineapple, apples, apricots, bananas, figs, peaches and pears.
