Do you know where your baking powder comes from? In my new book, High Tea, I talk a little bit about the story of Alfred Bird and his wife Elizabeth, who, in 1848 was diagnosed with the same food allergies that I have to eggs and yeast. Alfred, a chemist, invented two products for Mrs. Bird that went on to be cornerstones in everyone's kitchen today, Bird's Custard and baking powder. Without the severe allergies of Mrs. Bird modern baking would not be the same!
