A taxi stands still while all of New York rushes by.

Who do you want to meet?

Last night, I had the unique opportunity to attend a launch party for Red Currant, a new social media agency with the single mission of "helping food entrepreneurs prove their passion online."

The event was held in one of the micro-centers of "foodpreneurs" in New York City: Astoria, Queens. As I drove home past Manhattan's glorious and glittering skyline, I reflected on some of the people I'd met: a raw vegan chef, a young entrepreneur who buys 200 pounds of local honey each week at the farmer's market to create his cocktail mixers, a grandmother giving "foodie" tours in New York's neighborhoods-less-traveled, and a chef waiting out construction on his first restaurant, where Asian and Latin flavors will collide.

"Truly," I thought, "I'm blessed to be in a place where I can meet such a diversity of people, and to be building on freedible a community where all of them 'belong'."  It was a genuine joy to invite each of them to join freedible and share their passions with all of you.

But as I drove along I also had a question in my mind:  how can we reach all of those food-passionate eaters, entrepreneurs and writers and bring them together?  How can I reach the ones that you most want to meet?  Is it more low histamine chefs? More dairy-free yogurt makers? More childhood obesity advocates? More top-8-free restauranteurs? Or more of your friends, family, pediatricians and support network who make it possible for you to get through the week with your own eating restrictions?

And so I throw that question to you: who do you most want to meet from the eco-sphere that surrounds food? Who is the "wouldn't it be cool if" person or organization you'd most like to hang out with - if only you had an excuse to do so?

Now stop. I'm giving you the excuse: freedible isn't just my community, it's our community. Reach out to your favorite "wouldn't it be cool if..." person and please, invite them to join us on freedible. Freedible is an information resource - but it's also a movement and, I like to think, a celebration of all the ways we can empower ourselves through food.

And like any good party, we can invite whomever we want.

Happy Eating,

Future of food restrictions

Have a few things you'd like to change about the life of the custom eater? We'll bring your voice to FABlogCon - even if you can't!

Next week I'll be flying out to Las Vegas, where I'm honored to be moderating the closing panel of the Food Allergy Bloggers Conference.  I'm extra-thrilled because this panel will be focused on the question at the core of freedible: what can we do to "close the gaps" in existing care for food restrictions (and food allergies in particular) - whether that be a matter of policy and legislation or of support forums and online resources.

For the conference, food allergies docent and freedible member Jenny Sprague has brought together an amazing roster of speakers and panels - and we want to make sure your voice is heard along with theirs.

All you have to do to join this important conversation is to log in to the site and add links to your blog posts on things you'd like to see change for food allergy sufferers and other custom eaters, whether they be about policy, legislation, products or research.  Let's start the conversation rolling - and keep it going long after the conference ends!

Tosh.0 Makes Fun of Celiacs, Users Wish Death on People With Allergies
One of the reasons we believe we need a "freedible" is to heal the ever-increasing social divide between the "have-food-restrictions" and the "have nots".  This week, MyGFGirlfriend - and her non-GF boyfriend - take that wedge head on.
